When shipping internationally, your package may be subject to additional charges if it exceeds certain weight or size limits. These are known as oversize and overweight surcharges. Each carrier—UPS, FedEx, and DHL—has its own criteria and fee structure, so it’s important to understand how they work to avoid unexpected costs.
What Triggers These Surcharges?
There are two main triggers:
Overweight: If a package weighs more than 150 lbs (68 kg)
Oversize: If the package exceeds certain dimensions, like a length over 96 inches or a girth over 130–165 inches, depending on the carrier.
📏 Girth = (2 × Width) + (2 × Height)
| Carrier | Surcharge Type | Trigger | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS | Overweight | >150 lbs | $1,325 |
| Oversize | Length > 96" or L+Girth > 165" | $220 – $1,375 | |
| FedEx | Overweight | >150 lbs | $38 |
| Oversize | Length > 96" or Girth > 130" | $190 | |
| DHL | Overweight | >150 lbs | $60 |
| Oversize | Longest side > 100 cm | $25 |
